Curious supervision

Supervision begins with observation

In a time when the challenges are more complex than ever, having genuine oversight is essential for supervisory board members. Compliance demands are spiralling and the pull towards control is at an all-time high. Board agendas are packed with procedure adherence, KPIs and management reports. The fear of having missed “something” in time — and being held accountable for it — keeps growing.

But what if the real complexity plays out within and between people? How do you then keep sight of whether the organisation is doing what it was meant to do? And how do you stay connected with the people who can offer that perspective, without losing the distance that comes with your role?

In this masterclass, Suzanne Leclaire takes you into the most essential quality for navigating this: being inquiring. ‘Because it is not the answer, but the question that will teach us,’ says Suzanne.

What will you learn and experience?

  • That supervision calls for critical reflection on what we ‘take to be true’.
  • What happens when we respond from a place of ‘knowing’ or ‘thinking we know’.
  • How to find the ‘not knowing’ within ourselves — and for how long.
  • How to turn an (implicit) judgment, assumption or interpretation into a question.
  • When an inquiring conversation is necessary.
  • How to conduct one.
  • What this means for the supervisory board agenda.

For whom?

This masterclass is for experienced and new supervisory board members and commissioners from both the public and private sector. It offers insights for supervisors who wish to deepen their understanding of attitude, role-taking and skills.

How we work

Suzanne creates a temporary, safe, autonomous space for inquiry, in which everyone’s own wisdom is called upon. Using videos, podcasts, exercises, listening fragments and personal anecdotes. We work largely with the group as a whole; sometimes we practise in pairs. In every exercise, participants are challenged to do something other than what they would instinctively be inclined to do. After each ‘practice’, collective reflection follows.

Handouts

After the masterclass, participants receive a handout with practical, applicable tips on Asking forward. You’re also welcome to explore Suzanne’s podcast with leaders, supervisors and impact makers: Podcast – The Curiosophy Collective

About Suzanne Leclaire

I am a cultural scientist, executive and guide for leaders and organisations working in complex circumstances. Through my practice as both an executive and a guide, I learned that movement rarely emerges from giving more answers. It usually begins the moment someone dares to ask a different question — and is willing to look with attention at what is actually at play.

Inquiring life and leadership is my specialism. I invite people to look with curiosity at their own themes and practice, beyond quick judgments and fixed convictions. Not to tell them what to do, but to create space for their own wisdom and movement. Read more about Suzanne
